Getting There in The Big Island of Hawaii

Getting to The Big Island of Hawaii

The Big Island has two airports: Kona (KOA) on the sunny west side for resorts and beaches, Hilo (ITO) on the lush east side for Volcanoes National Park. They're ~1.5–2 hrs apart, so fly into the side you'll spend most time on. A rental car is essential — the island is larger than all the others combined.

  • KOA Ellison Onizuka Kona International (west side) — 15 min drive
  • ITO Hilo International (east side) — 15 min drive
